Some Notes from the Secret World

John Maclay’s curriculum vitae as a Freemason has been detailed in the notice for our meeting of May 31, 2008, at which he also presented a paper, so he won’t repeat it here. Except to note that, in addition, he’s now Grand Scribe of the Grand Royal Arch Chapter of Maryland.

John firmly believes, as did our late leader, James Harding, that Freemasonry just provides a framework for our further exploration of, and enlightenment as to, the far deeper secrets of the human soul, of the universe, and of God. Indeed, Freemasonry veils these secrets, so as to prompt us to seek them out, since only after the rough road are the contents of the secret vault brought to light.

Freemasonry is the oldest, most organized, and most widespread esoteric pursuit that continues the ancient Hermetic rituals and truths into the present time. And as such, it’s far superior, as the way to enlightenment, to the plethora of its esoteric offshoots.

Modern Freemasonry grew from the likes of Francis Bacon, Robert Fludd, Robert Moray, and Elias Ashmole, men who were not just scientists but also mystics. Indeed, men like these looked upon science as just a means of quantifying what they’d already discovered via mystical pursuits. Or rediscovered, because the truths they found go back to ancient Egypt.

Any Masonic Lodge room, and any Masonic ritual, contain more than enough symbols and practices to confirm the belief that Freemasonry is designed as just a starting point toward mystical discovery, and toward the creation of mystics. No less a Masonic giant than Albert Pike knew this, and expounded it in thousands of pages.

In his paper at our next meeting, John will hopefully communicate some of the mystical knowledge that Freemasonry has prompted him, or at least helped him, to find.
